Quotes

In History there are some pretty excellent quotations to be found. Here are just a few of my favourites…

‘History teaches us tolerance for human shortcomings and imperfections…’ – Lewis F. Powell

‘Historical sense and poetic sense should not, in the end, be contradictory, for if poetry is the little myth we make, history is the big myth we live, and in our living, constantly remake.’ – Robert Penn Warren

‘Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events ever resemble those of preceding times. This arises from the fact that they are produced by men who ever have been, and ever shall be, animated by the same passions, and thus they necessarily have the same results.’ – Machiavelli

‘History is the memory of things said and done.’ – Carl L. Becker

‘Without passion there might be no errors, but without passion there would certainly be no history.’ – C. V. Wedgwood

‘Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’ George Orwell

‘When the past no longer illuminates the future, the spirit walks in darkness.’ Alexis de Tocqueville

‘What is past is prologue.’ – William Shakespeare

‘The very ink with which all history is written is merely fluid prejudice.’ – Mark Twain

And next some quotes from the women themselves…

‘The stone often recoils on the head of the thrower.’

‘I wish to confess to you and tell you my secret, which is that I am no angel.’

‘A clear and innocent conscience fears nothing.’

‘I have to desire to make windows into mens’ souls.’

‘Although the sex to which I belong is considered weak you will never the less find me a rock which bends to no wind.’

‘There is one Christ, Jesus. One faith. The rest is a dispute over trifles.’

-Elizabeth I, Queen of England

‘ I was a Queen and you took away my crown; a wife and you killed my husband; a mother and you deprived me of my children: my blood alone remains- take it, but do not make me suffer long.’

‘Courage! I have shown it all of my life and you think it will fail me when all of my ills are to end?’

‘It is quite certain that in seeing the people who treat us so well despite their own misfortune, we are more obliged than ever to work hard for their happiness.’

-Marie Antoinette, Queen of France

‘In my end is my beginning.’

-Mary, Queen of Scots

‘My tribulations are so great, my life so disturbed by the plans daily invented to further the king’s wicked invention, the surprises which the king gives me, with certain persons of his council, are so mortal, and my treatment is what God knows, that it is enough to shorten ten lives, much more mine.’

‘In this world I will confess myself to be the king’s true wife and in the next they will know how unreasonably I am afflicted.’

‘The scandal of Christendom.’

-Catherine of Aragon, Queen of England

I dare say that there will be many more quotes added to this page in due corse! I’ll add them as I see them.
